We flew directly from Scotland to Washington DC and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts where we played four school shows and five public performances of Book One. Every one of them was sold out. That's right. We sold out our run at the Kennedy Center. In fact, not only were we the best selling show in this particular series, but they even added a performance. Just incredible. The response was so amazing that we sold out of about 2/3 of our merchandise at the very first public performance!

One of the highlights of the Kennedy Center gig was that I saw a couple of close friends whom I hadn't seen since my college days. And I caught up with my cousin Mark, who's now a retired Colonel, USAF. My wife and youngest daughter met me and Piper there as well and we had a blast touring the museums and eating some great meals.

We managed to catch a few days at home before flying to Costa Mesa, California, and playing shows at the Segerstrom Center there and at Citrus College, down the road in Glendora, CA.

The shows there were fantastic! Once again, at the Segerstrom Center, we sold out every one of them! In fact, it went so well that they're having us back in November with Book Two as part of a larger tour of California. We tried something brand new at those shows, too: audience participation. The audience lent their voices to a couple of key moments in the show. The part that worked best was when Mysterion hypnotizes the crowd and the audience joined in for the "yes master". I loved it so much that I think I'm going to add it to performances in the future.

From SoCal, we flew directly to Charleston SC where we played six shows at Spoleto Festival USA, one of the most prestigious performing arts festivals in the world. What an honor to play shows at the same festival as theatre legends like Stephen Berkoff and the folks who created the puppet horse in the Tony-winning play War Horse! The audiences there ate it up and it was so much fun to be the lowbrow alternative to events like a concert performance of Vivaldi's Requiem! They even threw a party in our honor--a special event for young donors. Super-cool!

One of the real highlights of Spoleto was when Cami Alys, our incredible touring Foley artist, led a sound effects workshop for kids staying at the Charleston Children's Hospital. Our team was so moved that they had to turn away for fear of bursting into tears. It's really awesome to be able to interact with locals in this way, particularly with kids who really can use a little extra joy in their lives.

Fingers crossed, we'll be back at Spoleto for Book Three!

Next stop: the Ann Arbor Summer Festival on June 30!

I have got to admit it has been the best trip ever in my appinion. It was amazing because ther was only 3 sound people and they done about 10 voices each. The piano player was fantastic with all the low notes and all the high notes. Molly was realy nice and how she could do all they different voices. The sound man up on stage was out of this world the wind sounded very real. The most favourite person I like was the doc and all the other people he played. It was like he had turned into a different person. It was out of this world.
Kelly

The book one was ausome but I bet that book two will be ausome to. I really liked cats but The Intergalactic Nemesis was so much bettter. The piano man was really good at the end his hands were all over the place I just couldn’t keep up with his hands. If I had to rate stars out of ten, I would pick ten and come back. I could just imagine how much you practiced. The man’s face who was acting ben he was so scary, He has a very loud voice it was scary. Goodluck for the future all of you. There was a big table in the middle with all these diffrent things on it like a toy truck, some maccaroni and all different strange things. When it began I was amazed at how all those things on the table made diffrent sounds and how the comic strip pictures flashed on the screen. It was so entertaning and that was all I talked about to my Mum and Dad.I think it was great how they had everything happen on the stage and it wasnt backstage. The cast was so friendly to us after the show as well. I will definatly be begging my Mum to take me again. Thanks for such a great day! Erin

intergalactic Nemesis was amazing. It was one of the best shows i have seen in my life.I loved the sound affects, they were out of this world. It was really cool how it was a radio show and the sound affects were not done with computers, and were done with all diffrent sorts of things. It was amazing how the cast could change there voices about 60 times in the show.Sometimes it was funny and other times it was sad.

Possibly the prettiest city in the UK. And the reception to our show was nothing if not effusive. Just incredible. Huge thank-you to the Imaginate Festival for bringing us out here. We've had a blast!

We arrived after a crazy travel day that consisted of getting to the airport at 6 AM Eastern and arriving in Edinburgh at 7:30 AM Greenwich time the next day. Needless to say, we were exhausted. When we got to the apartments we were staying in, of course they weren't ready, but the very nice manager Colin set us up with a crash pad, so Agustin and Piper went straight to sleep. Graham and I decided to wander around a scope out the city. Poor Agustin and Jessie had to load in that afternoon. Bleaugh!

Our apartments were perfect--two bedrooms and two baths. Even though Piper and I shared a bedroom, there was still plenty of room for everyone (we roomed with Graham). That first day was such a blur that I really can't remember much of it. Suffice it to say that by the time we went to bed, we were exhausted.

The next morning had us in tech, with a performance that afternoon at 2 PM. The show was a little rough--Graham and Buzz were still getting used to being back in it after a long hiatus. The rest of the group was getting used to Graham and Buzz. So I decided to take notes on that show and the next day's. But by the end of our second performance on Wednesday, things were really humming. The Herald reviewed the show and called it:

I let them know that if they wanted they could laugh, cheer, and applaud, contrary to what their teachers probably told them. The kids did just that and the performers loved it. A major Australian venue representative told me the show was "brilliant" after one of these student shows. I have to credit those amazing kids for being so darn loud!

Meantime, after the student shows this Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, we were able to be sightseers. We got a tour of Edinburgh Castle, we ate at the Witchery, we went to the National Museum of Scotland, Graham and I sampled a LOT of Scots Whisky and bought some to take home, and we walked through this incredibly beautiful walking city. Piper told me at least five times that she wanted to move here. The fact that the weather was mostly sunny didn't hurt one bit.

Jason with Tony Reekie, Imaginate Festival producerLast night was our official UK premiere. The folks at the Imaginate Festival decided to make a big deal out of it, literally rolling out a red carpet and encouraging the audience to dress up. It was a total party. The energy was through the roof and the audience response at the end of the show was like a rock concert.

We've got two more performances today, then we're done in Edinburgh. The team and I are renting a car tomorrow to drive through the Scottish Highlands a little, then on a plane Monday to Washington DC where we play the Kennedy Center.

From Brampton and St. Catharines in Ontario to Schenectady NY to our run on Broadway at the New Victory to Medicine Hat and Calgary, Alberta, to Vernon, British Coloumbia, we have tamed the North, I think!
Definitely want to give a particular shout-out to the Epcor Centre in Calgary. Once the nightmare of our housing situation got resolved, we all settled into our two-week run at the New Victory Theatre on Broadway. Jessie, Danu, and Cami all repeatedly told me that the gig has been a dream-come-true for them. And for me, too. Particularly today, when I actually got to perform in the show. Walking out of the stage door onto Times Square after the performance this afternoon was a real rush. I was like, wow, this really just happened. A dream I've had since I was 9 years old and saw Sandy Duncan perform on Broadway as Peter Pan.

The reviews have been killer as well, which has been really nice. You just never know in this city. The New York Post was the only paper of record to come, but we had a bunch of bloggers and they all seemed to love it:

The last couple of months have been a total whirlwind. From coming back from Hawaii and immediately going into rehearsals to record the radio version of Book Three: Twin Infinity to going back on the road in Ohio, Colorado, Canada, and Upstate New York, to being defrauded of thousands of dollars on the day we were scheduled to arrive in New York City (more on that below), it's been one thing after another. But we're here! In New York! About to make our Broadway debut.

Wait. I need to say that again to wrap my head around it. About to make our Broadway debut! Whoa!

The recording of Twin Infinity went incredibly well. The amazing folks of KUT-FM opened up their brand-new Studio 1-A to us for a full day. Thanks to the incredible support of the folks who pledged on our Kickstarter campaign, we were able to make this happen. We had a capacity crowd for the recording and it was unbelievably fun! The final mix should be ready soon-ish and I'll post when it is. Thanks to everyone who supported us and to KUT for the use of the space and to Cliff Hargrove for engineering the recording. You all rock!

Our shows since Hawaii really all went incredibly well. The best news is that every venue this year has committed to bringing us back either next year or the year after. I'll post our tour dates for next season soon, but, meantime, huge shout-out to the folks who programmed us into their seasons and the thousands and thousands of people who have come out to see us so far this year. Amazing!

Four days ago, I flew to Schenectady to meet up with the team to make the final journey to New York City. It was an ominous start. My flight was delayed and I literally landed, grabbed my bags, got in the van, changed shirts in the Proctors parking lot, and ran on stage to do the curtain speech. The show went great and the audience was awesome, but afterwards we went back to the hotel to discover that a water main had broken and there was no running water in the hotel. No showers. No toilets. Yeah.

We all took it in stride, and even joked that it's always darkest before the dawn. After all, we were about to be in New York City for our Broadway debut! Jessie had found the most amazing apartment to house all of us. Everything was going to be fine.

Little did we know...

On Monday morning, after not hearing from the NYC apartment manager over Easter weekend, we still hadn't heard from them. We tried calling the number listed and got stuck on infinite hold. We checked the website, but it wasn't there anymore. Instead it said "Bad Vacation". We emailed our contact to say that we were going to put a stop on the wire if he didn't get us check-in information. He emailed back with an address for the apartment, but no other information. No phone number. No time to meet someone. Nothing. And I had wired him $5600 to secure the apartment on Thursday.

The whole thing looked completely legitimate. We found them through HomeAway. They had a very legit looking website. They emailed us with apartment options with ground plans and photos. Then they sent us the wiring instructions. Done, right? Wrong.

Fraud.

You hear about it. You think that only a fool would get caught up in that. But then it happens to you and you realize just how gullible and trusting you really are.

We spent the entire day yesterday dealing with this, even as we were driving to New York City. Jessie Douglas and I both were on the phone and email and social media looking for a solution. We ultimately found housing thanks to suggestions from the New Victory Theatre, Elizabeth Helke at Temporary Apartments, and the help of the hundreds of people who spread the word that we were in need.

It's extremely unlikely we'll get our money back. I'm still dealing with that now. But everyone is safe and housed and we open on Broadway on Friday! Schedule and tickets HERE.

Some wonderful news today: Mario Troncoso of KLRU in Austin just posted this incredible trailer for a 30-minute documentary on the project that will broadcast on April 25. Watch and enjoy!

From coverage by NPR and Conan O'Brien to the premiere of Book Two: Robot Planet Rising to touring to places like the Wexner Center and returning to venues like the Lied Center of Kansas, each moment has been incredible. But the past 10 days have topped everything. We toured to Hawaii.

For me, the trip actually started on January 8 in Philadelphia, where I had just finished attending the International Performing Arts for Youth conference. It was 28 degrees when I left. I wore my green turtleneck and jeans and my overcoat, scarf and gloves. Brrrr. I met up with the cast in Denver (they had flown from Austin) and, after frantically trying to do some post-conference organizing, boarded the plane to Maui. Yes. Maui.

Unfortunately, the airline had changed the type of plane we were supposed to fly and they didn't have enough fuel to make it to Hawaii! So, after waiting on the runway for two hours (with us in the plane) they decided to land in Los Angeles for refueling, which took a whole other hour. So instead of taking 8 hours to fly to Maui, it took 11! But after 11 hours, who cared?? We were in Maui! Off came my turtleneck, on came my shorts. Hawaii advenutre was at hand.

A shuttle took us from the airport to our hotel. And what a hotel! The Maui Arts and Cultural Center put us up in the Marriott resort. We got in at night, so the view had to wait until morning. But I could tell from the sound that my room was very close to the ocean. I left the patio door open (screen door closed) so I could fall asleep to the sound of the waves. In the morning, to my amazement, I discovered that my room literally overlooked the Pacific. As you can see from the photo, which was taken from my balcony, we really were in Hawaii. I mean. Holy. Mackerel!

Jessie and Augie loaded into the theatre that morning, but the rest of us had time to play a little. I took a run up the shoreline. The rest of the crew hung out at the resort. It was heaven. From the infinity pool to the beach to the ocean. We kept looking at each other with goggly eyes, amazed at our surroundings. For all of us, this was a dream-come-true.

That afternoon we arrived at the theatre for sound check, which went flawlessly. That night the house was fantastic. Unbelievable enthusiasm from the folks who came. And, best of all, my wife Sarah was able to get away from her work and fly in that night (and helped me sell merchandise).

The next day we had the whole morning to hang out. Because of the time change, everyone woke up around 7. Chris, Buzz, Danu, and Higgins all went snorkeling. Sarah and I had a leisurely breakfast. We all met up by the pool and then caught the shuttle to the airport for our flight to Hilo, on the Big Island.

Immediately when we landed in Hilo, the fabulous Lee Dombroski picked us up at the airport, helped us get our rental cars, led us to the venue to drop off our gear, and then escorted us to the hotel. Immediately after checking in, we searched out a black sand beach and found one: Richardson's Beach. Not only was the setting beautiful and the sand really black (!) but we actually saw a half-dozen sea turtles. These suckers are enormous! Easily as long as I am tall.

That night we ate at a local favorite: Ken's House of Pancakes. It was really our first taste of Hawaiian food and we loved it so much, we ended up eating every meal in Hilo there! At Ken's, they feature portions they call "Sumo". Anytime someone orders a Sumo, they smash a gong on the counter and the entire restaurant shouts "Sumo!" So Higgins decided to order a breakfast Sumo that consisted of a mountain of pancakes, blueberries, whipped cream, and coconut syrup, plus a plate of three eggs, ham, and bacon. Sumo, indeed!

From Ken's it was off to the only active volcano in Hawaii, the one at the center of the Big Island. And holy cow! It was a real volcano. The drive was pretty neat because we started in the rain and then it stopped raining. It was dark out, so hard to see exactly what was going on. At first, we thought it had cleared up, but then realized we had actually driven up past the clouds!

The volcano crater glowed red with smoke or water vapor rising from it. We couldn't get that close (which was too bad because it was really, really cold up there).

The next day we woke up to a fantastic feature story in the Hawaii Tribune-Herald. A fantastically well-written story by John Burnett. After that, we were all in great spirits and we loaded into the theatre and, again, it went without a hitch. The audience that night was fantastic. A full house and literally one of the most enthusiastic crowds we've ever had. I started to get the feeling that maybe, just maybe, we'd come back next year with the sequel.

But first we had to make it through the next 24 hours.

At 7 AM, we had to return the cars at the airport and fly to Honolulu for a show that night! Normally, when we have back-to-back shows like this, we drive to the next city immediately following that night's performance. But obviously there was no way to drive because Honolulu is on a different island and no flights were leaving that night. It would have been exhausting but fine, if the electricity hadn't gone out at the airport. That would have been okay if the backup generators were working. But they weren't. So we waited. And waited. And waited. For 30 minutes, then an hour, then two. Our boarding passes were handwritten. Security wouldn't let us through. We started to make a backup plan if we weren't able to get the show loaded in on time.

Finally, the electricity came back on. Seating on the airplane became open seating. Buzz and I tried to fenagle our way into first class, but no go. So we sat in random seats in last class and finally took off for Honolulu.

Unlike the other parts of Hawaii we had seen, Honolulu was a real city. The 12th largest in the country, actually. It was a complete departure from everything else we had seen. Beautiful, but different.

There wasn't time to go to our hotel, so we went straight to the Kennedy Theatre at the University of Hawaii, that night's venue. It is an incredible structure and it turns out that it was designed by I.M. Pei. Cool!

Not so cool was the fact that our host, Tim Slaughter, had just had a family emergency and couldn't make it to the show. This was disappointing not only because personal tragedy sucks, but also because I really wanted to thank him in person for organizing our trip. If it weren't for him, we wouldn't have been in Hawaii at all. At the moment of typing this blog post, I still don't know if that emergency has been resolved for him, but my heart goes out to him and I hope that the next time we see each other it's under better circumstances.

To say we were wiped out at this point would be a gross understatement. At this point, the four-hour time change had caught up with all of us. Without a chance to nap, with a late start to the workday, we were exhausted. Miraculously, Aughy was able to get us back on track schedule-wise. The folks at the venue made sure we had hot food to eat before the show. And, after all that, we had one of the best performances of Target Earth ever. The audience was unbelievable, the performers pulled out all the stops, we signed merchandise and programs for more than an hour after the performance. It was incredible. What a way to end the work part of the trip.

And to top it off, we had another day-and-a-half on Oahu and two days on Maui left!

The next day, the group split up. Most everyone hung out on the beach in Waikiki all day and watched the sun set over the Pacific. Sarah and I drove to the North Shore, with a stop at Pearl Harbor. For me, that was the highlight of Honolulu. I couldn't help but think of how desperate the Japanese must have been to attack to the US Navy there all those years ago. They actually knew that they would probably lose the war.

The North Shore was beautiful. We had dinner in a restaurant on the beach.

The next morning we flew back to Maui where everyone relaxed either at the beach or at the pool. All of us were gearing up for the highlight adventure of the trip: the road to Hana.

The Hana Highway is a 51-mile stretch of road that weaves its way clockwise around the island of Maui. It takes at least three hours to drive it. With more than 50 one-lane bridges, hundreds of hairpin turns, and views that boggle the mind, it's best to plan a full day to drive there and back. And that's what we planned.

The next morning we met up at 6:30 in the hotel lobby. Me, Sarah, Buzz, Danu, and Jessie formed a carload. And it was off to the town of Paia and a famous restaurant, Charley's, for breakfast at the very moment the restaurant opened. The eggs were delicious. The pancakes larger than the plate. The waitress still needed coffee, though. When the credit card machine wasn't working, she just returned our bills to us with our cards, announcing that the credit card machine wasn't working. No directions to the ATM, no suggestion of a payment Plan B. We all looked at each other, confused. But then the credit card machine started working again, so we paid and hit the road.

Our first stop was a famous surf beach. The waves were at least 12 feet tall and there were more than a dozen surfers in the water, even at this early hour. From there, it was to the bamboo forest with a hike to a waterfall. On the way we stopped at a coconut stand, where the woman at the counter cut open one with a machete and we drank the water inside and at the fruit. Delicious!

The next stop was the bamboo forest. This place was amazing. We were told to park by the side of the road and push our way in through the bamboo. At first, it didn't seem like there was even a path in, but within a few feet we found a path and that path led us to a waterfall. These photos below tell the story. Just amazing.

After the bamboo forest, we picnicked in the car, but just after we were done eating, we came upon a grilled chicken stand by the side of the road. So we ordered ourselves a half-chicken and ate that too. Possibly the best grilled chicken I've ever had.

Along the way we saw at least half-a-dozen waterfalls, some incredible views, black sand beaches, and finally we made it to the national park at the end of the road, with the world-famous Seven Pools. We swam in one of those pools which was fed by a waterfall and fed into the ocean. It was pristine. Just incredible. We left there at about 5:30 or 6 PM for the drive back, in the dark. Scary!

Our last day in Hawaii (with a flight that left at 10:30 PM and arrived back in Austin at 4 PM yesterday) was spend whale watching (we saw about a dozen of humpback whales) and dinner at Mama's Fish House, which is one of the best meals I've ever had. A perfect way to end this dream-like trip.

So, a huge "thank you" to the venues for bringing us out and the hundreds of people who came out to the three shows. You were all fantastic hosts. We had an incredible time. And we most certainly hope to come back next year with Book Two!

I had just founded Salvage Vanguard Theater, a company devoted to the development and production of new plays, so it seemed like a no-brainer. Being a huge fan of Star Wars and Raiders... of course was a huge part of the decision and, thus, The Intergalactic Nemesis was born.

Since then the project has gone through a bunch of evolution, most importantly, when we added comic-book artwork (by Tim Doyle) to the performance experience and christened the Live-Action Graphic Novel in 2010. Starting this month, we begin a world tour that takes us as far West asHawaii, as far East as Scotland, and includes a week at the Kennedy Center, two weeks on Broadway (next to the theatre in which Spider Man: Turn off the Dark is playing), and the world-renowned Spoleto Festival USA. To say it's a dream-come-true would be an understatement.

Last year, we premiered a sequel, entitled Robot Planet Rising, and all along I've known that it would become a trilogy. The path to creating the third and final chapter of The Intergalactic Nemesis is upon us and once again it starts with a radio play.

Welcome to The Intergalactic Nemesis - Book Three: Twin Infinity!

This script is a revision of the script that Ray Colgan, Chad Nichols, and I wrote in 2005, when I had no idea what the scale of the project would become. It was this script that inspired me to revisit the roots of the project and revamp the earlier chapters. In fact, that script was so strong, it put the others to shame and they had to be completely rewritten! Even though we performed it in 2005, we never recorded it. Now that the first two chapters have been finished, I've gone back to Twin Infinity and updated it to match the new Books One and Two and I'm really happy with the result. Even more, I'm thrilled to announce that KUT (Austin's NPR affiliate) has invited us to finally record that script in their brand-new Studio 1-A, which not only has state-of-the-art recording capabilities, but also has room for a 70-person audience.

People who pledge $100 or more to this campaign can be part of the history of the project. You and a friend will be our guests at the recording. Your response will be recorded for all time, broadcast on KUT and other NPR stations around the country, and made available on CD to anyone who is interested. But even a $15 pledge will get you a credit on the CD for having helped produce it.

All the money from this campaign goes towards paying the actors (Chris Gibson and Danu Uribe), composer Graham Reynolds, Foley maestroBuzz Moran, and stage manager Jessie Douglas for their work rehearsing and recording Twin Infinity. I'm going to be acting in it, too, which I can't wait for.

This performance and recording officially launches us on the path to premiere the Live-Action Graphic Novel version of Twin Infinity in 2014 with artwork by David Hutchison (Robot Planet Rising). Thanks so much for taking the time to read this and for pledging to help complete this epic adventure of creating The Intergalactic Nemesis.

We've loved every minute of it!

We're on a little hiatus now because of the holidays and I'm personally really happy to spend those holidays with my wife and kids, but the new year starts with a bang. We play Austin's Stateside at the Paramount on January 5 with a double-feature of Target Earth (3 PM) and Robot Planet Rising (7 PM). Then we immediately fly off to a series of gigs in Hawaii!! Holy mackerel!!

Our spring travels take us all over the country, wrapping up with a nine-week outing that takes us to the New Victory on Broadway in NYC (April 4-14), the Canadian Rockies (April 19-22), the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach FL (May 4), the IMAGINATE Festival in Edinburgh Scotland (May 7-11), the Kennedy Center (May 16-19), Southern California (May 29-June 2), and, this just in, the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston SC (June 5 -9).

If you don't know already, Spoleto is one of the top performing arts festivals in the world! You can't apply to get in--they invite you. When I got the call, I felt like I had gotten a call from the Nobel Committee! I literally had to double-check on the web that I hadn't heard wrong on the phone. Absolutely amazing!

We've got about 20 gigs between Hawaii and New York as well, so come on out, wherever you are! The complete tour schedule is HERE. Hope to see you in 2013!
